Residents in Shearstown and Butlerville will be getting their mail somewhere else starting next week.

Canada Post is moving its mailboxes in Shearstown after learning Bradbury's Superette, where the some 700 boxes were housed, will be closing.

Just where exactly is still up in the air.

According to a spokesperson with Canada Post, the some 700 mail boxes will be located at Brook Road in Butlerviller starting Monday (Aug. 25(

“This is only temporary while we work with the local officials to find a permanent solution,” Canada Post’s Carley Smith wrote in an email.

This will place the mailboxes just over two kilometres from where the residents previously received their mail, Bradbury’s Superette.

The move was necessary after the owners of Bradbury’s began the process of closing its doors earlier this summer. As a result, Canada Post was given 90 days to find a suitable fix.

According to Smith, customers will be receiving a letter notifying them of the change and how they can pick up their new keys.

However, Bay Roberts Mayor Philip Wood said the town was told the boxes would be placed at Reid Street, a small stretch of pavement off of Pickett’s Road.

“It’s a dead end street. It’s just a lane,” said the mayor. “There are concerns about safety.”

For the town, it appears a new location for the mailboxes has popped up every day.

“We were only notified a couple of weeks ago,” said Wood.

Bay Roberts does not have any land to make available, although they have made suggestions on possible locations.

In an attempt to nail down exact details, the town has arranged a meeting with representatives from Canada Post for Thursday (Aug. 21).

The Compass will have more information as it becomes available.
