Avalon Community Players holding auditions for West Moon this weekend

The Avalon Community Players will bring a Newfoundland tradition to light in its rendition of West Moon this November, and they are searching for locals to help.

Avalon Community Players will hold auditions for its performance of West Moon Aug. 30 and 31.

An open audition for the performance, which takes place All Souls Day, Nov. 2, at the Sheila NaGeira Theatre in Carbonear, will be held this weekend, Aug. 30 and 31. All ages and experiences are invited to take part.

The play is one written by a Newfoundlander on the tradition of All Souls Day. It takes place in outport Newfoundland, where tradition says the dead return to earth for that day.

West Moon revolves around that notion, where 10 deceased characters talk in a graveyard in Placentia Bay about their deaths.

Although different from the group’s typical performances, which include comedies like Arsenic and Old Lace and melodramas like Mumberley Inheritance, director Marcia O’Neill believes it’s a feat they can pull off.

Since June 2013, the Players have put off numerous performances, and each time have welcomed community involvement.

The group is holding an open audition to allow anyone who wants to try their hand at theatre the opportunity.

“It’s community theatre,” O’Neill tells The Compass. “The bigger crowd you have, the more options you have. And it gets more people involved.”

There may only be eight weeks to prepare, but O’Neill believes with dedication from a cast and crew that want to be involved, the time won’t have any bearing on the outcome.

“The neat thing about community theatre is aiming to put together an excellent performance, but at the same time, you’re having fun doing it,” she explains.

Something O’Neill appreciates is the unique personalities getting involved during rehearsals keeping things interesting.

“We have more fun at rehearsals than just about anything else I have ever done,” she laughs.

Each performance the group has put off has been successful, and O’Neill says it’s because of the energy everyone experiences waiting for the curtains to open.

“The nervousness goes away and people just perform with confidence,” she explains. “I’m always really impressed.”
