The case of a St. John’s man accused of sexually assaulting a female youth returned to St. John’s provincial court Tuesday morning.

Christopher Butt, 38, of St. John’s is escorted by sheriff’s officers at provincial court in early August 2014.

Christopher Butt, 38, appeared from Her Majesty’s Penitentiary by video conference. He has remained in custody since his arrest in late July on charges of invitation to sexual touching, sexual interference, aggravated sexual assault and uttering threats.

Butt told Judge Lois Skanes Tuesday he is still trying to obtain a lawyer. Crown prosecutor Elizabeth Ivany suggested bringing the case back to court next week for a status update would be the best thing to do. Skanes agreed to set over Butt’s case until Sept. 5.

The identity of the complainant is protected by a publication ban. The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary reported earlier this month the accused and the victim know each other and the crimes were allegedly committed over a six-week period. She was treated in hospital for minor injuries.

Butt has offered his consent to remain in custody and has so far not requested a bail hearing.
