Mayor Tom O’Brien paid tribute to former town manager Barry Coates at the regular general meeting of the Stephenville town council on Thursday.
Coates died on Aug. 10 at Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital at the age of 62 years.
O’Brien said during the 37 years that Coates spent with the Town of Stephenville, mostly as town manager, he served the town well.
“Barry had two loves in his life, the first for his wife Patsy and the second for the Town of Stephenville,” O’Brien said.
He said a passion for Coates in his leisure time was for anything that had wings and flew. O’Brien said Coates was instrumental during the years in getting many aircraft to come to Stephenville for events like Harmon Field Day and most recently when aircraft came for the Snowbirds event in June.
Through Coates’ work with the town, council members all became friends with him in the process and it was sad that he passed at a fairly young age, the mayor said.
