Memorial University can be an easier place when a year’s tuition is not at the front of your mind.

Carbonear's Katie Snow has been awarded the Tom Martin Scholarship for Learning from YM Inc, for her work at Bluenotes in the Trinity Conception Square Mall in Carbonear. The scholarship is valued at $5,000.

That is how Carbonear’s Katie Snow, 18, must feel as she began the first year of her business commerce degree this week at the Newfoundland university after receiving the Tom Martin Scholarship for Learning from YM Inc.

Valued at $5,000, the scholarship is awarded to a post-secondary business student employed at one of the eight clothing stores under the YM banner across Canada — Katie works at Bluenotes at the Trinity Conception Square Mall in Carbonear — and is a national competition.

“I thought my chances were pretty slim,” said Katie.

Despite her hesitation, Snow completed the required 500-word essay, listing her volunteer work, school-related activities and a host of other requirements.

So, it was with great surprise when she walked into her Bluenotes store early last month to see it set up for a big celebration. There were balloons, a cake, the whole nine yards.

“It was unexpected,” said Katie. “I cried for days.”

That last part may not be literal, but the meaning is the same. Katie was excited. She was one of the few who have captured the award from Newfoundland and Labrador.

The scholarship also includes a trip to Toronto, Ont., for a gala with the other winners.
