There was a mixture of excitement and trepidation at schools throughout the Trinity-Conception-Placentia region today as hundreds of students made their way to classes to begin the 2014-15 academic year.

It was also a red-letter day for educators, who welcomed back their charges following summer break.

According to the provincial government, the 2014-15 school year will see about 67,400 students enrolled at 262 public schools throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. Ten year ago, there were 81,000-plus students, and 300-plus schools.

Here are some scenes from opening day at schools in Bay Roberts, Carbonear and North River.
