Derm Mooney (left) gets emotional when the total raised from his cancer fundraiser is revealed. Matt Foley (centre) and Janie Lane were two of the organizers of the event.
Several of his Sobey's colleagues planned a walk in support of their friend to raise money to help alleviate the financial burden of travelling the 300 kilometre return trip to St. John's for treatment.
The walk was a good choice for a fundraiser, since Mooney has always been an active person.
When Aug. 19, the date of the walk, arrived, Mooney joined some 175 people who turned out to support him in his battle.
The large group made the five kilometre trek around Placentia, ending where they began - the Sobey's parking lot.
A giant cheque was presented to Mooney totalling over $20,000.
"I am totally in shock from the response from the whole community, and not only in our town and area," Mooney wrote in a letter to The Compass.
Donations came in from as far away as Ontario.
Mooney is grateful to all those who helped, but especially to the organizing committee for putting off an excellent fundraiser.
He issued a thank-you to his colleagues "who are not only my co-workers, but are truly my best friends."
Many that know Mooney have referred to him as a positive person and a great friend, which he explains hasn't changed since falling ill.
Mooney will continue to fight his battle with positivity and high spirits.
"I can't wait to get well and get my life back to normal," he said. "Hopefully someday I can return the good deeds you have done for me and help somebody else."
