Sudden death reported on Portuguese vessel

Deemed not suspicious, followup underway

The body of a crew member on the Portuguese fishing vessel Calvao was taken from the ship and onto land at the St. John’s harbourfront today.

The sudden death was first reported Thursday morning and has so far been deemed non-suspicious, according to the RCMP.

The office of the chief medical examiner for the province is conducting a followup investigation and both the RCMP and Canada Border Services Agency are providing assistance.

The followup includes gathering statements from the ship’s crew and officers.
