Shauna Griffiths wins prestigious fundraising award at pageant

Shauna Griffiths is not only a leader in her community, she has also proven to be a leader in the province.

Shauna Griffiths of Ship Harbour, Placentia Bay, earned the prestigious Isabella Ashley Spirit of Giving award at the 2014-15 Miss Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador pageant.

The 17-year-old Ship Harbour resident was the only contestant from Placentia Bay to participate in the Miss Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador scholarship competition in St. John's Nov. 13 to 16. And she is happy she did.

The Level III student from Laval High School earned two big recognitions at the final gala, coming home with a top 10 finish and also earning one of its most prestigious awards - the Isabella Ashley Spirit of Giving award.

That award is given to the young woman who raises the most money for the Ronald McDonald House of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The late Isabella Ashley was the first Miss Newfoundland, crowned in 1936. She was the honourary patron of the pageant and the award's namesake, but passed away in December 2012.

All 23 contestants were required to fundraise prior to arriving at the pageant, but no one came close to Griffiths total.

The student council president and cheerleading captain's efforts resulted in a $10, 717.25 donation, a quarter of the $42,800 raised in total.

Last year's winner, Bailey Tarrant of Lawn, raised $2,260 of the $21,200 total for 2013.

In only a few short months, Griffiths arranged several large fundraising events in her community - two online auctions, sold cold plates, a bake sale, ticket sales on fish and ticket sales on two ice cap tickets, $50 gas card, $60 Swiss Chalet gift card, a bottle of red wine and a night at the Extended Dust Hotel. She also received many donations from local businesses and different individuals in the community.

After the pageant, Griffiths updated her Facebook status to show how excited she was about the gala.

"Totally speechless after tonight. Miss Achievement was my first ever pageant and I received the Isabella Ashley Spirit of Giving Award and I was a top 10 finalist ... Thank you everyone from the bottom of my heart for all your support," the post said.

With a beaming smile from ear to ear, Griffiths appeared in photos with other winners after the gala. But she also made time to get pictures taken with her two sisters, Shilah and Shania.

Outside the pageant scene, she plays soccer and basketball, and also sings at the Cavalier Café at her school. Shauna's career goal is to become a medical examiner.
