With work now underway along Veteran’s Memorial Highway for the eventual construction of a new stadium in Harbour Grace, one might wonder what will become of S.W. Moores Memorial Stadium.

At Wednesday night’s council meeting, Coun. Hayward Blake suggested the town should issue a request for proposals (RFP) this fall for the 57-year-old building. The issue came up at a recent economic development committee meeting.

“We had some discussion on the old stadium, as we’re referring to it now, and maybe the possibility that some time in the fall we might want to request an RFP to see who might be interested in that building,” he told fellow council members at the June 17 meeting.

According to Blake, the current timeline suggests the new $21.5-million facility will be ready for use by early 2017. That dollar figure is similar to the one linked to the original design proposed for the stadium. The Compass reported last June the projected cost was scaled down to $14 million.

Blake meanwhile hopes the old stadium might represent an opportunity for a business owner already in the community or someone from outside the area looking to start or expand a business.

I don't think the town can afford to operate two large recreation facilities such as the new arena and the SW Moores, few towns in the province would be in a financial position to do so. Concerts, ball hockey, volleyball, trade shows, dog shows, car shows, etc. can all the held in the new arena from May to September. The manager and board of directors need a year round plan for the facility. I think SW Moores should be sold to the highest bidder as long as the new owner meets municipal regulations, if the purchaser can create some local jobs that would be a bonus. And Joe, any need of the negativity, isn't there enough of that going around now?

If I were the town council and thank god I am not...I wouldn't be so quick to do anything with it....the new stadium is not even built yet. We all know that things in the Historic Town of Hr. Grace don't always go smoothly....lets not forget, they are the laughing stock of the province...lol

why does it have be turned into another warehouse or storage facility for some one outside Harbour Grace? Why can't be used for the people of Harbour Grace? the people of this town have lost enough in the last 15 years why not give them something everyone can use. granted the new stadium will by great for hockey and skating in the area, but not everyone is a hockey nut or likes to skate. so why cant we take the old stadium and remove all the old equipment from the rink making process and host stuff like concerts, ball hockey leagues (no ice needed there) indoor soccer, volley ball and many other TOWN ORIENTED EVENTS!!! so we dont have to go to Paddys garden or othplaces out side our area for fun and entertainment. thats just my opinion it may not make a row of beans to anyone but I just had to get my thoughts out. thanks.
