It appears hockey at the Bay Arena in Bay Roberts is on ice until at least the end of January.

A message sent to members of the Bay Arena Minor Hockey Association from the executive stated that the stadium would be closed until the final week of next month.

Officials with the stadium confirmed they are waiting to hear back from the insurance company before they can move forward with any repairs. Earlier this month, an electricla fire broke out in the refrigeration room causing damage to the panel and hindering operations.

The closure of the stadium for an extended period of time throws a monkey wrench into the plans of groups like Bay Arena minor and recreational hockey, as well as the Conception Bay North Skating Club, CBN Junior Stars, the Tri Pen Osprey and Tri Pen Ice.

That’s not to mention any private hockey that runs out of the stadium.

The Junior Stars have managed to secure some ice time for games at the neighbouring S.W. Moores Memorial Stadium in Harbour Grace, while the Osprey hit the road to Nova Scotia for the IceJam before playing a number of games on the road on the provincial circuit.

They were next scheduled to play at the Bay Arena on Jan. 31,which is now up in the air.

Bay Arena minor president Brenda Cole said the association was “working on” a solution.

“Harbour Grace has graciously agreed to open up the stadium for us, outside of their regular working hours and to bring in their own staff to accommodate us,” she told the Compass. “We are so lucky to have another stadium in Harbour Grace and greatly appreciate that they are willing to work with us.”

The association has made similar inquiries into ice time at the Trinity-Placentia Stadium in Whitbourne and the PARC Unity Arena in Placentia but there has been no word as of yet.

Meanwhile, the Conception Bay North Skating Club is still working to replace the hours it’s lost with the stadium shutdown.

Some of the club’s competitive skaters have been able to latch onto other clubs as a guest skater, while programs like Can Skate and Star that run out of the Bay Arena are feeling the pinch.

The CBNSC does run its synchro program, as well as some Can Skate and Star programs out of Harbour Grace already.

There just isn’t enough ice time in the Conception Bay North region to accommodate everyone’s needs.

“It’s a hard situation,” said CBNSC president Sherri Keefe.
