The majority of the Spaniard's Bay Volunteer Fire Department have resigned from their positions.

Spaniard's Bay Town Hall

This leaves the Conception Bay North without fire protection for the immediate future.

News of the resignations broke earlier tonight over social media as numerous members posted that there was a mass resignation from the department. It is unknown how many members of the department have stepped away from their positions at this time.

Spaniard's Bay Mayor Tony Menchions confirmed the resignations, although there is very little information available at this time.

The department came under fire a couple of months back when Coun. Brenda Seymour made a pair of motions that called for the removal and suspension of fire chief Victor Hiscock during a Nov. 16 council meeting. Both of those motions were defeated, along with another to re-evaluate and re-structure the department.

A motion to have an independent review of the fire department was approved during the same meeting.

In the meantime, the neighbouring Bay Roberts Volunteer Fire Department are on call should they be needed. The fire department in Upper Island Cove are also on call if they are needed.

"The residents of Spaniard's Bay will not see a gap in or lack of fire protection servies," said Bay Roberts Fire Chief Adam Norman.

The Compass will have more as it becomes available.

There went the magic hour. If you have ever been a volunteer or full time fire fighter, you know what I'm talking about.

Regardless of the final outcome of this story, this story has raised a few issues that should be a concern to everyone involved. The porno at the end of the video (yes, it was not the SBFD delivering the training) and the comment :it was just a joke" speaks volumes to the culture that still exists and fluffing it off as inconsequential is unacceptable in this day and age. Secondly, after reading some of the posts on the support SBFD Facebook, especially the comments about the chatroom and that it was just women talking-they all say things like that. Really, its normal to discuss hiring a hitman? That says a lot about the mentality.

Please keep in mind, with all this happening. Brenda's husband is also part of the fire department. Just keep that in mind.

The term "Volunteer" Firefighter is misleading as they do get paid. Volunteer firefighters are part time. The whole thing has not been handled well at all by everyone involved. Hopefully cooler heads will prevail and everyone calms down. Sadly many times culture vs change-culture wins

Have to agree with Concerned. These people were volunteers, not employees, and ime one of the benefits of being a volunteer is that when you get fed up with someone's drama or with the way an organization is being run, you can just quit. Ime most people will put up with a bit for a good cause, so that many people quitting at once would seem to me to mean that there's been a fairly high level of frustration for some time now. In all fairness, the problem could be misogyny. But it could also be that this particular woman simply isn't a leader. Also IAF, I can think of more than a few men who wouldn't have been happy about the porn, either, but who would have tuned it out and kept their mouths shut rather than deal with being called a priss or a prig for objecting.

Thanks for the open mind Connor. I had to check: "A misogynist is a person who hates or doesn't trust women." Although I have now been accuse of being a "Mysogynist", my argument is that the this is an issue of a 'lack of leadership skill" and not being "rewarded" with an unwarranted promotion to a level of incompetence. "I'm - give me a promotion! No? You hate ." (In this case happens to be "woman". *sigh* You aren't qualified. "Be a man" and deal with it. (lol)

Sounds to me like Brenda Seymore is the problem. It is clear she lacks the skill to lead the fire department. It's a small town volunteer department. They have to work with the firefighters they have. Ms. Seymore's self serving agenda has left people at risk - and it seems mostly because she wants a (possibly unwarranted) promotion. If someone has tp carry me out of a burning building, I want the biggest strongest guy around. Not some politically correct slip pf a girl with a persecution complex. Clearly she lacks the support of the firemen. That should be enough to fire her.

Well Craig (you pathetic misogynist) the 'biggest strongest guys around' got their panties in a knot and all resigned. So good luck in that burning building!

Man, you nailed it. The ending of sexual harassment is a totally self serving agenda! She should definitely be fired because the people sexually harassing her would rather quit than stop that behaviour. Get real! They're putting people at risk because they prefer to quit than to quit harassing women!

Except the people she's gunning for had NOTHING to do with the "adult video content." That was dealt with. I merely contend that her actions as reported indicate quite strongly she lacks leadership skills and suggests she considers herself deserving of special treatment - a sense of entitlement. Perhaps she has already been promoted to her level of incompetence. None of my comments are tied in any way to gender, but some people prefer to suggest that than actually discuss the facts. *sigh*

Sorry, man, but you're the one who fails to face facts. Fact: she is a leader. She is an elected councillor. Fact: she's reported several instances of sexual harassment, at least one of which was verified by the perpetrator (I don't know about the others) Fact: the fact that we don't know what happened in the other cases indicate that, most likely, nothing did happen. As for the person who played the adult video, he has not been disciplined and was only removed from his role as instructor yesterday, long after he played the video which he admitted to playing on more than one occasion. Fact: the fire chief is responsible for the actions of his crew and discipline if necessary and for addressing issues such as an instructor playing pornography in a training course. All indications are that no discipline actually took place. Fact: Seymour only was "gunning" for the fire chief Fact: rather than staying in his position and attempt to improve things in the department, the chief chose to quit Fact: rather than staying in their position at least 19 other firefighters chose to resign in support of their chief, putting their community at risk Fact: this is, at it's heart, a question of sexual harassment and how it was dealt with - or not - at this fire department I understand why some people would get upset with Seymour and I will also concede that as a councillor she brought these issues up for discussion in a forum that no other firefighter would otherwise be able to. Honestly, she didn't handle it all that well but neither did the chief and all the facts seem to indicate that there's a real problem in the department. Now if you want to bring more facts into this discussion, feel free. I really have an open mind so if you're able to show how the facts you bring into this discussion can show that sexual harassment isn't the main story here (there certainly are several key points in this saga) I'd be willing to consider them.

Fact there was a letter written by a person who was at the meeting and it clearly said that the fire dept members didnt resign until after another counselor ( also a lady who was put in charge of bringing any problems before council) made a statement that she could no longer have her family (children included) verbally abused by Mrs. Seymorur. It was then that the chief along with 19 of his men stood to support her fellow council member. Showing that video was beyond wrong but the wrong person took the heat for showing it.

Small town bully mentality especially in a male dominated profession. I think their resignation was warranted who wants these kind of sexes ignorant people running your town.

For the ones who resigned, council should have rejected their resignations, and promptly fired the lot of them. Bravo to this inspirational and courageous woman.

Mass resignation definitely looks fishy and implies guilt. If there was no wrong doing, then there would be no need of a mass resignation. Doubtful that we'll ever know what the truth is.

Doesn't imply guilt. These people are volunteers and what volunteers wants to have name dragged through the ringer just by association.

    • Joey
      January 22, 2016 - 00:38

Actually, their names get dragged through the ringer when they resign rather than doing the job they volunteered to do. If they still wanted to resign they could at least have done it after replacements were found. If they don't want their names dragged through the mud they should have all - including the fire chief - taken the higher ground and found away to improve the apparent misogynist culture of the department. Maybe organised some sort of fundraiser for a woman's shelter or even volunteered at one, tried to recruit other women to the force, that sort of thing. Instead, they just quit.
