Following years of fundraising activity, the Baccalieu Trail SPCA is making major progress on its plan to open an animal shelter.

The not-for-profit group announced Tuesday it purchased a seven-acre property in Spaniard’s Bay. Located at 28 Gullies Road on the very edge of Spaniard’s Bay’s municipal boundaries, the property will reportedly offer plenty of room for a shelter with indoor and outdoor space.
The group is also looking to eventually relocate its thrift store to this property. That store is currently located on Bareneed Road in Bay Roberts.
“It is an exciting time for the board, members and supporters of the Baccalieu Trail SPCA,” board chair Sonya Nolan Baker said in a news release. “We will still need to continue with our fundraising efforts to ensure adequate funding to construct a fully functional shelter, but the board feels this is a great first step.”
News of the land purchase comes five years after the group was founded. Co-founder and vice-chairwoman Laura-Lee Hiscock said the group is still seeking major sponsors to help build the shelter.
“There's definitely going to be very exciting times ahead and this shelter will be a great asset to the Baccalieu Trail area and their animal population.”
