Do the right thing and leave an old man alone

Things have entered the final showdown, similar to the legendary gunfight at the O.K Corral, in 1881.

But there are small differences, instead of bullets and guns it’s contracts and bulldozers.

The outlaw cowboys would be the Canadian Forces (who you would think to be the good guys), the lawmen would be 85-year-old Frank Meyers and his group of supporters.

The Trenton, Ont. senior was approached by the Department of National Defence to sell his 200-acre property for a Special Forces Headquarters.

When he refused, he claims it was seven years of pressure to give up the land.

Threats of expropriation ensued, and he finally caved for an undisclosed sum. He was permitted to finish the 2013 crop season but then the land would be leveled in the name of progress.

His request for an extended stay on the family property owned for 227 years was denied.

The one-man battle was drawing to a close, but just like the in the western classic this is turning out to be, in rode the cavalry.

An outpour of social media support, a technology the senior was unfamiliar with, has Myers building an army of his own. At last count the Facebook page Save Frank and Marjorie Meyers Farm had 30, 272 supporters. That’s over 3,000 more than the Conservative Party of Canada’s page.

It was a movement that got the senior fighting again. He is claiming the agreement was signed under duress and that he still owns the land.

When demolitions crews showed up they were stopped.

Unfortunately the stories are rolling out that the law is on the side of government, that the paper work is done and no amount of complaining and protesting is going to change it.

Now is when this western tragedy needs a hero more than ever.

It might be laughable to think of Stephen Harper in stirrups, kicking open the double-hinged saloon doors and shooting up the place.

But it’s not so laughable to see him as the man correcting this matter. After all, he is the Prime Minister.

It’s obvious that Myers doesn’t want to sell, and there is ample space at bases across Canada that can accommodate a Special Forces Headquarters and training area.

We don’t mean to sound bias but Newfoundland and Labrador would certainly welcome the opportunity to host.

It wasn’t all that long ago Harper’s government said the skeleton of what it once was 5-Wing Goose Bay had a future.

The base that once hosted NATO low-level flight training has massive amounts of unused infrastructure and housing going to waste, and would have no problem accommodating the additional Forces.

With sovereignty to the north becoming such a large issue, a Special Forces team would be a welcomed addition for Labrador.

So here’s the chance to do something classy, to disprove the cold conservative reputation that has shrouded Harper and the opportunity to pump new life into an existing base that needs it.

Just do the right thing and leave the old man alone, or come election time it could be a Shane ending, except there won’t be a little boy watching the Prime Minister ride off into the sunset yelling, Stephen, come back!

The farmer should be allowed to live his remaining years that he is able to on the farm.. I agree...ask Newfoundland/Labrador and utilise the resources the government already has...

Yes but there was also a LAWYER present when the paperwork was submitted stating he was under duress when he signed. Its funny how people always seem to leave that part out. And as far as im concerned what greater good could there be over food directly going to the mouths of Canadians? A base can be built on any land we cannot simply pick a new location for a far that has been cultivated for over 200 years. Plus the fact that it would be an absolute tragedy to lose the history of this land. Canada is still so young and we are already bulldozing our history? That doesn't give much hope for the future now does it?

Sooo put it in NFLD? Will they relocate CFB Trenton also? 12other families were also involved and have sold out for the greater good of the community. Just as Mr. Meyers has. Yes Has, he has signed the papers with friends, family, and LAWYERS awareness.

Our farmers are a dying breed and those that want to continue farming should be given so much respect! I am sickened that this poor man is being treated like this! Our expropriation laws NEED to change.

Excellent article. I also support the Meyers 100%. Expropriation is so wrong when all an 85 year old man wants is to work his land as he always has done, it's what keeps him alive and well.

Unfortunately not many people understand the title "Prime" minister or who he is a puppet for. As soon as people start to understand this, we will have a more concious society... I support Frank and Marjorie 100%... I truly hope they maintain the rights to their farm...
