Former firefighter feels efforts underappreciated

Please allow me the space in your paper to express my thanks and appreciation to all the former members of the Spaniards Bay Volunteer Fire Department.

Letter to the editor

Most have many years of service in the protection of the citizens and property, especially former Chief Hiscock, who has invested more time than anyone in running the business of the department.

These facts seem to have been lost in the mess of events of late. While it’s true that most of the members resigned their positions, we did so in support of the Chief, who supported former liaison councillor Collins, who has allegedly been the victim of bullying and harassment.

Where is the thanks and appreciation shown to the former members for all their efforts? Where is the respect and appreciation from our council? To date, I haven’t seen any.

Former firefighter Jerry Bowering, a 19-year veteran, writes from Spaniard’s Bay

I am not a fireman and have never been but when I of the danger and hàrdship they face I conclude they don't get the support and appreciation they deserve.

Were you in the room when the porn was showed? What does a "fine upstanding member of SBFD", and a Church-going family man think of the training session? Did you stand up & say "this is not o.k." ?What about the 12 OH&S safety infractions? I understand that you are a former Provincial worker, do you know what those violations mean? It's appalling. What about the injured Municipal Worker who, I understand, is about to loose his leg due to an accident while fixing the Fire Department door? Did you ask Sherri Collins if it was actually harrassment, or was she being questioned as to why SHE did not report all the wrongs that were happening in our Town? It was her ressponsibility to do so, as Liaison to the FD, don't you think? Mr. Bowering, there hasn't been any respect earned here. You have to earn respect, it doesn't automatically come to any job. You should re-evaluate your opinion of Ms. Collins, and this whole situation, which , you BTW, were part of .....If you say nothing, you are just as guilty as the one who played the video.

I was not present during the training session, I did not see any video, and I would agree it was not ok. I guess its easy to make such vindictive remarks when you can hide behind the computer screen.

"Did you stand up & say "this is not o.k." " I'll answer that. He resigned in support of the SBFD. 'Nuff said.

You have to live by your mistakes, you may not like them, that is a part of life. What was done should have never happen in the first place, to disrespect a woman or man, its not right. For the twenty or so that gave up being a fireman, there no better then the Chief. As for thanks, you do not get it because you were all part of it, but you didn't get away with it.

You just don't get it, do you? Sad...

Well cry me a river. The fire dept under Chief Hiscock has had more incidents of female discrimination, harassment, sexual harassment, safety violations and gender biased than Kellogs has corn flakes. 20 members resigning and putting an entire community at risk is inexcusable regardless of the reasons noted by Mr. Bowering.

Respect is not Automatic because you are a member of a certain organization. RESPECT IS EARNED, it doesn't come with the job.
