Letters to the editor -
Dear editor,
Duff roots run deep in Carbonear and we love to visit this beautiful town.
On our visit this summer we realized again that Carbonear seems to be a well-kept secret. Carbonear's rich and colourful history could be advertised and developed into a vibrant tourist destination.
Events such as the British escape to Carbonear Island during the D'Iberville conquest in 1697 when everywhere else became French; the centrality of Carbonear in the long history of the cod fishery; the story of Sheila NaGeira; and currently, the possibility of finding the oldest church in North America nearby.
We urge the mayor and council to make it a priority to promote Carbonear as a tourist destination. While benefiting the town businesses, it would be a way to share this fascinating history with the rest of Canada and the world.
William and Mary Duff
