Letters to the editor -
Dear editor,
As I read the Carbonear Town Council news reported in your June 15 issue, I was shocked to learn that the council approved 500 municipal tax dollars to attend the Carbonear-Harbour Grace District PC fundraiser.
It was only this past week that Bill Murray, the former government employee, who was key in the MHA constituency (spending) scandal, apologized for his role in the scandal.
This action by the Carbonear Town Council borders on scandalous.
As a municipal council the members should conduct council matters in a non-partisan manner. If the councillors are eager to support Mr. Kennedy's re-election campaign, then they should do so with their own dollars and not tax dollars.
During the past municipal election, the citizens of Carbonear wanted change and accountability with the town's finances. I submit that the town got change but this example demonstrates it is debatable if there is accountability.
The town councillors should reimburse the town for the cost of the fund-raiser or council should be prepared to cut cheques for the Liberal and NDP associations.
Paul Baldwin
