A respected medical doctor who spent his entire career in Conception Bay North has been named patron for the 2012 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games, scheduled for Carbonear and Harbour Grace from Aug. 18-25.
Carbonear Mayor Sam Slade made the surprise announcement during a unique ceremony at The Railway Station Museum in Carbonear this afternoon (July 10).
Dr. Wells and many of his family members were in the town to donate an elaborate sundial, which was unveiled on the grounds outside the museum. The ceremony also coincided with his 87th birthday.
Dr. Wells, who served as a surgeon in Carbonear for more than three decades before his retirement in 1990, said he was honoured to have been asked to hold such a prestigious post during the Games.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the last time the two towns hosted the Summer Games, and Dr. Wells also played a role in that sporting event as the convenor for the tennis competition.
