The Avalon girls’ ball hockey team continues to be a strong contender for gold at the 2012 NL Summer Games.

Avalon, which is comprised of players primarily from the Trinity-Conception region, improved its record to 3-0-1 this afternoon (Aug. 24) with a 7-0 thumping of the Host team. The game was called off early in the middle frame because of a mercy rule.

The team is now virtually assured of an appearance in the gold medal game, which is scheduled for Saturday (Aug. 25) at 10 a.m. at the S. W. Moores Memorial Stadium in Harbour Grace.

The girls will be looking to equal their Avalon male counterparts, who won the boys’ gold earlier this week.

The Host girls, meanwhile, are in action at 3:30 p.m. against Mount Pearl/South and will be looking for their first win.
