Veteran goaltender Freddie Diamond has requested a trade from the CeeBees

The man who backstopped the Conception Bay North CeeBee Stars to three-straight Herder Memorial trophies, six straight appearances in the senior final and is, arguably, the winningest goaltender in the franchises’ storied history has requested a trade.

Freddie Diamond has decided not to travel with the team after formally requesting a move from the only organization the Bonavista native has played for in the last nine years.

The 29-year-old made the decision after the CeeBees’ two-game set with the Gander Flyers, Oct. 20-21.

“I went to Gander the first weekend and never got to play,” Diamond told The Compass. “There was no communication between me and the coaches on what their plans are for me, and stuff like that.”

The goaltender said he was left “wondering what was going on” but “couldn’t get any answer” from CeeBees’ brass.

“I told them that I was looking for a trade,” said Diamond.

CeeBees’ assistant coach Peter George said Diamond is signed to a card with the club, and his rights belong to them.

However, he did say Diamond’s request for a trade was a personal choice.

“He doesn’t want to fill a backup role,” said George.

No direction

Diamond said he has “sacrificed” a lot of time and effort over the last nine years with the club.

The thing that hurts the most for Diamond is the lack of communication over the summer.

“A phone call throughout the summer or something like that saying, ‘hey Freddie, we’re going to use an import goalie and he’s going to play most of the games and if you want to go somewhere else, thanks for the nine years here and it’s time to move on’ you know, something like that would’ve been alright,” he said. “There was none of that.

“It was the same with last year.”

Heading into last season, Diamond felt like he had played some of his best hockey at the senior level.

“And, then it was, we lost to Grand Falls in the Herder final, you know, and then it was like, boom that’s it,” he said.

Diamond said he was not overly frustrated with the situation, just that he was “lost in direction with his role on the team.”

“It’s a hard situation to be in,” he said.

Interest out there

There are suitors out there for the three-time Herder trophy winner with one of those being the expansion Gander Flyers, who are looking for a veteran keeper after the Flyers failed to sign Roger Kennedy when they took him in the Mount Pearl player dispersal draft.

“They’ve called me a couple of times and asked me I would be willing to play there,” he said.

Diamond believes he would be a “good fit “ with the young club.

“I think I could pass a long a little bit of experience,” he said.

Head coach Corey Crocker had been in contact with Diamond about a possible move to Gander, according to the tender, but no move was every agreed upon.

The Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts have also expressed interest in the veteran keeper, but Diamond does not see that being much of a possibility due to his work commitments before December.

Regardless, Diamond still believes he has a couple of good years left on the provincial senior circuit.

“Personally, I think I can still play,” he said. “It’s too early to retire yet.”

I think its time for the owners and investors of the ceebee organization to sit down and get a better game plan, local coachs know local hockey.Once the fan base loses interest , the ceebees will be in the same boat has the breakers.GONE....Freddy Diamond has missied out on a lot of things, giving up countless hours of time for practices, road trips, games etc.I hope that he does get his trade and is the sole reason for the ceebees not winning another game or herder.Coachs are easy to replace with a winning record like crocker, try finding another Goalie with the record of Diamonds.....Good luck Crocker your going to need it.

sounds about right with Crocker, he doesnt' communicate with his players, only thing he communicates is when he's looking for his cheque or money for his flights. Freddie gave his all for 9 years and this is how they repay him? Flys a fella in to play in net and he has a 4.50 gaa so far. Sure you saying Freddie couldn't have done that? Woulda saved a fortune. Too much money. Glad I gave up me seats. Sounds like the money tree needs to be watered down. They put an article in last week that the fella Thomas was going to save the day it seemed. Now he's gone too. They had 4 defense sunday I heard, sure you wouldn't beat Cupids on hodgewater pond with 4 defenseman.
