Eastlink CeeBee Stars defenceman Mike Dyke has been named the team's captain for the 2013-14 Newfoundland Senior Hockey League season.
"It's always an honour when you've been named one of the leaders on the team," said Dyke.
Dyke has been a stalwart on the CeeBees' blue-line for the past several seasons.
At six-feet, four inches tall and 200 pounds, he is not hard to miss when he steps on the ice. Dyke is coming off a season where he registered five goals and 13 assists.
A two-way defenceman, Dyke is equally adept at defending the CeeBees' zone or turning the puck up ice in an attempt to create offense for his club.
When he is on the ice, there are a few things one can be sure of. Dyke will make a couple of opponents miss in the neutral zone before making a pin-point pass to a teammate, and a big hit could be coming at any time.
Dyke said it will not only be up to him to lead the CeeBees.
"In order for us to be successful this year, it's going to take everyone in our room to be a leader and contribute in different ways," he said.
Sure to help out in the leadership department will be veterans Chris Sparkes, Ray Dalton, Donnie Gosse and Terry Ryan. Gosse is expected to be a part-time player due to work commitments.
Ryan returns to the CeeBees after being acquired from the Mount Pearl Blades for a 4th round pick.
Dyke is the latest captain in the storied history of the Harbour Grace franchise.
It became necessary to name a new captain after Keith Delaney was shipped to the Clarenville Caribous over the summer.
"It's a great list of players that have captained the CeeBee Stars, and I feel priviledged and honoured to be a part of that," said Dyke.
Meanwhile, the CeeBees announced a list of 25 players confirmed for this season.
Along with Sparkes, Dalton and Ryan, the following are the forwards expected to play this season:
• Matt Bragg;
• Mitch Bragg;
• Jordan Escott;
• Colin Escott;
• Chad Earle;
• Colin Feehan (editor's note: Feehan's name was mistakenly omitted from the Oct. 8 print edition of The Compass.)
• Kevin Reid;
• Stephen Greeley;
• Daniel Sparkes; and
• Cody Roach.
Joining Dyke and Gosse on defence will be Fred Earle, Tyler Gale, Dylan Brake, Jamie Tobin, Doug O'Brien and Nick Theriault. Like Gosse, O'Brien and Theriault will see limited action due to work commitments.
Draft pick Joey Yetman will join longtime keeper Freddie Diamond in goal.
Hot seat ticket sales continue this week, running from 10 a.m.- Noon and 2 p.m.- 5 p.m. at the S.W. Moores Memorial Stadium in Harbour Grace.
