Bay Roberts school defeated in crossover

Ascension Collegiate Astros quest for a third straight Wesley Goose Memorial High School Hockey Tournament title ended a little earlier than they would have liked.

The Astros, of Bay Roberts, had its run to the championship ended in the first semifinal game on Nov. 24 losing to eventual tournament champions the Queen Elizabeth Pioneers of Foxtrap.

The Pioneers bested the two-time defending champions 2-1 to book its ticket to the championship round. Reilly Deering had the only goal for the Astros.

'We're disappointed that we lost, but we had our chances," said Astros coach Paul Gosse.

In the other semifinal, St. Kevin’s High of Goulds and O’Donel High of Mount Pearl squared off with the Mount Pearl school coming out on top.

This set up a dramatic final.

O’Donel lead 1-0 heading into the final 10 minutes of the third period. Then, the Pioneers found their game.

Queen Elizabeth scored three times in the final 10 minutes to take the coveted Wesley Gosse Shield by a 3-1 score.

The Astros posted a round robin record of four wins and one loss.

In its first game, Ascension beat St. Kevin’s by a score of 2-1. Reilly Deering had both goals for the victors.

Next up was Laval High of Placentia. The Astros defeated the Cavaliers by a score of 7-0. Brady Barrett and Ryan Dawson had two goals each to pace the victors.

St. Kevin’s were up next, with the Astros doubling up the Mavericks 4-2. Ascension followed that up with a tight 3-1 loss to Laval.

Local teams

The Laval Cavaliers finished the round robin with a record of one win and three losses.

The Cavaliers split with the host Astros, while dropping two games to St. Kevin’s.

Carbonear Collegiate went winless at the tournament with a record of 0-3.

The Sentinels were lumped in a division with O’Donel, Exploits Valley High in Grand Falls-Windsor and tournament champion Queen Elizabeth.
