Recreation Committee chair Coun. Mary Beth Farrell informed council Tuesday night Osmond will be returning to Marystown Apr. 19.
She said the committee plans to inform the Ice Crystal Figure Skating Club to organize a reception.
A native of Marystown, Osmond will be leaving next week for Sochi, Russia, to compete in the 2014 Winter Olympics on Canada’s figure skating team.
Farrell said tentative planning is already underway to host a luncheon in her honour at St. Gabriel’s Hall, with a viewing of her Skate Canada winning performance in Ottawa this month. She said schools and local businesses will be asked to get involved and decorate their premises for her return.
The digital billboard on the Marystown Town Hall property will be used to promote her visit.
Deputy-mayor Al Spencer suggested council should contact the provincial government to recognize Osmond in the same way it did the Brad Gushue curling rink, when it won a gold medal at the 2006 Olympics.
He said from his recollection provincial government employees and schools were allowed to watch the championship game during regular business/school hours.
Fundraising efforts are now underway to help Kaetlyn on her road to Sochi.
