Cataracts rout Flyers, clinch first place over; Blades and Royals split

The Conception Bay North Eastlink CeeBee Stars, who secured a playoff spot in the last game of the regular season last year before going on to win the provincial championship, figure to be a team not to be overlooked again this year.
The CeeBees, using only 11 skaters, rallied for three straight goals to tie the game, and then scored twice in the shootout for a 4-3 win over the Clarenville Caribous Sunday at the Clarenville Events Centre.

The Clarenville Caribous’ Jeremy Barron (far right) moves on a loose puck in front of goaltender Jason Churchill while teammates Dustin Russell and Cody McNamara deal with the C.B.N. CeeBee Stars’ Jamie Tobin during the team’s NLSHL game Saturday in Harbour Grace. The CeeBees won 4-3.

In another Newfoundland Senior Hockey League game Sunday, the Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts thumped the Gander Flyers 10-4 to clinch first place overall in the league.

In Clarenville, the CeeBees overcame a 3-0 Clarenville lead with two goals by Ray Dalton and a single from Mike Dyke. In the shootout, the CeeBees’ Wes Welcher and Chris Sparkes scored the only goals.

Chad Earle, Martin Lapointe and Ryan Desrosiers had the Clarenville goals.

At the Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium in Grand Falls-Windsor, Cam Fergus sparked the Cataracts with four goals and Mike Sibley and Andre Gill both had a pair. Also scoring were Rodi Short and Brandon Bussey. Matt Squires netted the first two goals of his senior career for the Flyers. Sean Wadden and Jonathan Reid also scored.

Cats goalie Drew Manuel posted his first career win.
