The Laval Cavaliers male hockey team fell just short in its quest for a Confederation Cup tier II title on Feb. The Placentia-based Cavalier dropped a tight 3-1 decision to Discovery Collegiate of Bonavista at the Goulds Arena.  Drama was the name of the game for Laval as the team needed back-to-back shootout wins in the quarter and semifinals to advance to the title game. The Placentia-based Cavalier dropped a tight 3-1 decision to Discovery Collegiate of Bonavista at the Goulds Arena. 

Andrew Kelly was the lone goal scorer for Laval, while Discovery got goals from Matthew Fisher, Blake Waye and Nathaniel Duffett.

"It was a great tournament," said Laval coach Mike Gambin.

It was Laval's first trip to the final in 15 years.

The Cavaliers posted a 2-0-1 record in the round robin portion of the tournament.

In its first game, Laval met the team from Blaketown's Crescent Collegiate. They bested the Coyotes by a score of 5-1.

Goal scorers were Francis Pittman (3), Nick Pittman and Justin Edison. Kyle Wice had the lone goal for Crescent.

Next, the Cavaliers picked up a tight 3-2 victory over the Booth Memorial Braves. Nick Pittman paced Laval with two goals.

In Game 3, Laval met the Barrington Braves of Nova Scotia. The two teams tied 4-4, with Nick Pittman notching all four of the Cavaliers markers.

The playoffs were next, beginning with meetingthe Carbonear Collegiate Sentinels. The Cavaliers bested the Sentinels 4-1 to book its tickets to the quarterfinals of tier II.

Nick Pittman (2), Tyler Whittle and Brandon Collins had the goals for Laval.

Drama was the name of the game for Laval in the quarter and semifinals. The team needed back-to-back shootout wins to punch its ticket to the finals.

First, the Cavaliers defeated the Mobile Monarchs 4-3 in the quarterfinals. Scorers were unavailable.

Next, they defeated Torbay's Holy Trinity Tigers 4-3 to advance to the final.

How the rest did

Meanwhile, there were three other teams from the Trinity-Conception-Placentia region competing in the tournament.

The Ascension Collegiate Astros of Bay Roberts finished the tournament with a record of no wins, two losses and two ties in tier I.

Carbonear Collegiate and Crescent Collegiate both went winless in three round robin games and a single playoff game.

2014 Sportsmanship award winners were Brady Power (Ascension), Josh Williams (Crescent), Nick Pittman (Laval), with Carbonear's winner to be announced.
