Five boys provincial high school basketball tournaments this weekend

Bishops College hosts 4A

The best high school boys’ basketball team in the province will be crowned this weekend when Bishops College in St. John’s plays host to School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador’s 4A championship.

While Bishops is staging the Tier I tournament, across town at Prince of Wales Collegiate, the boys’ 4A Tier II tournament will be held.

At Bishops, the host Barons will tangle with Holy Trinity High Tigers of Torbay, Booth Memorial Braves of St. John’s and Corner Brook High Titans in the White Division. The Red Division will see Gonzaga Vikings and Holy Heart Highlanders of St. John’s along with O’Donel Patriots and Mount Pearl Senior High Huskies of Mount Pearl.

The tournament opens today with three games slated for 4 p.m. (Holy Trinity and Bishops), 5:45 p.m. (O’Donel vs Holy Heart) and 7:30 p.m. (Gonzaga vs Mount Pearl).

The final goes 11 a.m. Sunday at the Memorial University gym.

At PWC, the host Cavaliers are in the Red Division with Elwood Lakers of Deer Lake, Exploits Valley Eagles of Grand Falls-Windsor and Clarenville Cougars.  The Navy Division will see competition with Holy Spirit Falcons of Manuels, Mealy Mountain Collegiate of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Ascension Collegiate Astros of Bay Roberts and Gander Collegiate Concordes.

The tournament opens with the first of four games today at 3 p.m. featuring Ascension and Holy Spirit. The opening ceremonies are 5 p.m. followed by a 5:30 p.m. game between PWC and Clarenville. Elwood and Exploits Valley go at 7:15 p.m. and Mealy Mountain and Gander Collegiate meet at 9 o’clock.

The championship game is set for 6 p.m. Saturday at PWC.



Six teams will compete for the provincial boys’ 3A championship at Templeton Academy in Meadows. They are Templeton Academy, St. Catherine’s Academy (Mount Carmel), Tricentia Academy (Arnolds Cove), Laval High (Placentia), New World Island Academy (Summerford) and Pasadena Academy.



At the 2A tournament in Plum Point, teams entered are the host Viking Trail Academy, Indian River High (Springdale), St. Bonaventure’s College (St. John’s), Lakewood Academy (Glenwood), St. Lawrence Academy, Belanger Memorial (Doyles), Fatima Academy (St. Brides) and Bay D’Espoir Academy (Milltown).



Six teams are in Lawn for the A championship. Vying for the title are host Holy Name of Mary Academy, Valmont Academy (King’s Point), Stella Maris Academy (Trepassey), Swift Current Academy, St. Mary’s All Grade (Mary’s Harbour) and St. Joseph’s All Grade (Terrenceville).
