Placentia's Laval High Cavaliers female ball hockey team fell just short of the AAA provincial championship after a 2-1 loss to Canon Richards Memorial of Flower's Cove on April 5 at JM Olds Collegiate in Twillingate. Laval captures silver in AAA tournament
It was another weekend another AAAA ball hockey banner for Ascension Collegiate in Bay Roberts.
This time it was the girlsâ turn at winning the provincial banner.
The Astros defeated a tough squad from Menihek High School of Labrador City 8-6 to take the coveted championship at Ascension Collegiate on April 5.
The victory comes a week after the Ascension male team won their provincial tournament.
On its march to the final, the female Astros went unchallenged.
The team started the tournament off on April 3 with a 10-5 victory over the Queen Elizabeth Pioneers.
From this point, the Astros would squash any competition that stood in their way by way of impressive foot speed, team play and goaltending.
First, Ascension bested Marystown High 7-0 then followed that up with a 7-0 shutout of Botwood Collegiate on April 4.
The Mount Pearl High Huskies awaited the Astros in the semifinals on the morning of April 5. The Huskies got there with a record of two wins and one loss.
Ascension handled the Huskies 7-1 to book their ticket to the championship round.
Natalie Keeping received the sportsmanship award for the Astros.
Members of the Astros are: Natalie Keeping, April Squires, Kaila LeDrew, Shelby Batten, Brooke Williamson, Taylor Quinlan, Courtney Caravan, Courtney Petten, Kiana Hodder, Keelee Pham, Britanny Corbett and Chelsey Pike.
Laval captures silver
The Laval High Cavaliers were on the wrong end of a one-goal game in the final of the AAA female ball hockey championship at JM Olds Collegiate in Twillingate on April 5.
The Placentia-based Cavaliers lost a heartbreaker 2-1 to Canon Richards Memorial High of Flowerâs Cove in the championship.
After a 5-2 loss to Canon Richards to start the tournament, Laval rattled off three straight victories to punch its ticket to the finals.
The first was a 8-3 victory over Jens Haven Memorial of Nain. That was followed by a tight 5-4 defeat of the hometown JM Olds Collegiate.
In the semifinals, the Cavaliers bested Labrador Straits Academy of LâAnse-au-Loup.
âThis is only the second year for the girls team so we are very proud of our team,â said coach Michael Gambin.
Level III student Alicia Culleton received Lavalâs sportsmanship award.
