Captures gold in invitational tournament

When attempting to shutdown a team with a high-powered offence it takes a complete team defensive effort.

The CeeBees minor under-15 female team captured the gold medal in its invitational tournament at the S.W. Moores Memorial Stadium in Harbour Grace April 4-6. The CeeBees defeated the rival Trinity Placentia TeePees of Whitbourne 3-1. Next up will the under-15 female provincial tournament. Members of the team are: front (l-r) — goaltenders Kelsey Shute and Britanny Kelly; middle — Camryn Taylor, Sam Pike, Dakota Sheppard, Ally Cleary, Kaitlin But  andAbby Reynolds; back — coaches Cory Kelly and Bill Pike, Melissa Murphy, Emily Jones, Alliah Jayne, Nancy Pike, Rhiannon Kelly, Kristen Shute, Taylor Slade, Mackenzie King and coach Doug Taylor.

And, that is exactly what the CeeBees minor under-15 female team got when they squared off with the Trinity Placentia TeePees.

It was in the championship of the Girls Under-15 Invitational Tournament at the S.W. Moores Memorial Stadium in Harbour Grace April 6.

The CeeBees held the high-powered offense of the TeePees to a lone goal in their 3-1 victory.

Camryn Taylor, Kristen Shute and Rhiannon Kelly had the goals for  the CeeBees.

“They played their hearts out,” said coach Doug Taylor.

The CeeBees went undefeated in the tournament defeating the TeePees (6-1), Glovertown (12-1) and Clarenville (3-1) en route to the championship.

“It was a team effort,” said Taylor.

The CeeBees got big efforts from all players on the bench. From Samantha Pike, Sam Pike, Dakota Sheppard, Ally Cleary and Kaitlin Butt to Abby Reynolds, Emily Jones and Melissa Murphy, each player had a role to play in the team’s title run.

At any level, a hockey team will only go as far as their goaltending will allow them.

So, it helps when the CeeBees were able to throw a top-notch goaltenders like Kelsey Shute and Brittany Kelly at their opponents.

Both had strong tournaments as the team surrendered just four goals in four games.

“The goaltending was superb,” said Taylor.

Members of the team are: Kelsey Shute, Samantha Pike, Sam Pike, Dakota Sheppard, Ally Cleary, Melissa Murphy, Brittany Kelly, Kaitlin Butt, Abby Reynolds, Melissa Murphy, Emily Jones, Alliah Jayne, Nancy Pike, Rhiannon Kelly, Kristen Shute, Taylor Slade and Mackenzie King.

Gaining momentum

With their invitational tournament out of the way, the CeeBees have turned their attention to the under-15 female provincial tournament being hosted in Harbour Grace April 11-13.

Here, the team will welcome others from Straits minor in St. Barbe, Glovertown, Stephenville and Twillingate.

This makes the CeeBees tournament win last weekend a huge step in their confidence.

Any time a team can win a championship and then head directly into a provincial tournament brings nothing but good things.

It means some extra jump at practice and a clearer head as the tourney nears.

Taylor sees this and acknowledged it will be big for his team.

“Our tournament was a huge momentum boost,” said Taylor. “Our confidence is really high.”

The unknown

For Taylor and the CeeBees, there is a sense of the unknown in the tournament.

Aside from Glovertown, the team does not know a whole lot of information on their other three opponents.

“We haven’t played either of them before,” said the coach.

The unknown means a couple of scouting trips to the arena prior to his teams first game on Friday.

However, Taylor has complete confidence in his team’s ability to overcome any team that stands in front of them.

“They’ve proven they can play with the best,” he said,

When asked how he expects his team to fare in the upcoming tournament, Taylor hopes for the best.

“I think we can pull off a medal,” he said.

The CeeBees kick off the tournament with a 12:30 p.m. tilt with Stephenville on April 11.
