CeeBees' under-15 female goaltender Kelsey Shute (centre) makes the save on this bad angle shot from a Straits player in the championship game of the udner-15 C division provincial tournament at the S.W. Moores Memorial Stadium in Harbour Grace on April 13. The Straits won the title with a 2-0 victory.
The Harbour Grace-based team had just suffered a 2-0 defeat to the Straits of St. Barbe in the final of the 2014 Steele Hotels Female Under-15 C division provincial tournament at the S.W. Moores Memorial Stadium in Harbour Grace on April 13.
But, as the players gathered around goaltender Kelsey Shute consoling themselves they received something that might have been just as valuable.
The some 200 CeeBees fans in the stadium stood to give their players a resounding ovation, which lasted a couple of minutes.
Turning to acknowledge the show of support, players like Samantha Pike, Kristen Shute, Camryn Taylor and Rhiannon Kelly offered a smile in appreciation.
The CeeBees and the Straits produced what some might will a classic. It was a game that featured drama, intensity and some stellar goaltending on both ends.
Straits jumped out to an early lead in the first period. It was one they would not relinquish.
For the next 30 minutes of game time, the CeeBees pushed for the equalizer while goaltender Kelsey Shute and the CeeBees dependable defence kept the Straits offense at bay.
Midway through the third period, the CeeBees came dangerously close to tying the game up at one when Pike drove a puck off a post and it somehow stayed out of their opponents goal.
A late goal put the Straits up 2-0.
Prior to the championship game, the CeeBees went undefeated in four round robin games, posting a record of three wins, no losses and one tie.
The team played Stephenville (2-2), Glovertown (10-0), Twillingate (3-1) and Straits (4-3).
The silver medal picked up by the under-15 team was the second provincial medal for the Harbour Grace-based association this season.
The CeeBees’ under-12 female team grabbed gold in the D division of the under-12 mega tournament held in Corner Brook April 4-6.
