Trinity Placentia, Bay Arena grab provincial banners

The scene in the dressing room of the CeeBees minor peewee A team was something out of a movie.

Members of the CeeBees minor peewee A team celebrate their peewee E division provincial championship win over the Marystown Mariners at the S.W. Moores Memorial Stadium in Harbour Grace April 23.

As Queen’s seminal track “We Are The Champions” blasted from a set of speakers in a corner of the back-wall dressing room, players lined up to sign the peewee E division provincial banner.

It’s was a fitting song, seeing as moments earlier, the CeeBees had survived a late game push by the Marystown Mariners to secure the 3-2 victory in the championship game at the S.W. Moores Memorial Stadium in Harbour Grace.

Players hugged each other, huge smiles plastered on their faces, while a pair of coaches shook hands congratulating each other.

“This is special,” said coach Brian Donovan, a broad grin permanently etched on his face. “There’s nothing like winning on home ice.”

It took a complete team effort for the Harbour Grace-based club to pull out the victory. From its forwards to the defence, every player chipped in and made the win possible.

Of course, any championship run begins and ends with goaltending, and the CeeBees had two excellent keepers in Josh Mullins and Ryan Combden.

On this night, Comdben had his number called and was up to the task.

“Ryan had one goal today, to win a provincial championship,” said Donovan.

The CeeBees got on the board first when hulking defenceman Josh Squires fired a rocket past the Marystown goaltender in the opening frame.

The 1-0 lead would hold for the remainder of the first period and minutes into the second.

After a couple of minutes of sustained pressure, the Mariners knocked in two quick goals both off of scrambles to make the score 2-1.

However, the lead would be short lived as CeeBees’ forward Josh Neil buried a pass from Lucas Bishop to make it 2-2.

The score remained that way until nine minutes left in the third when Nick Donovan made a end-to-end rush that ended with the game-winning goal.

For the rest of the period, the CeeBees dug in their heels and held on.

Combden stood tall in the goal, turning away every Marystown shot he faced over the last half a period.

“When it got to the last minute, it was like an hour,” said Donovan.

The coach praised Marystown has a “good team.”

“They threw everything at us,” he said.

Members of the team are: Ryan Combden, Josh Mullins, Lucas Adams, Nick Donovan, Josh Neil, Josh Squires, Ben Tuck, Cameron Hunt, Alex Clarke, Bradley Byrne, Colby Drover, Lucas Bishop, Cody Squires, Blair Harris, Ethan Brushett, Sebastian LeShane and John Verge.

TeePees golden

Meanwhile, the CeeBees were not the only team from the Trinity-Conception-Placentia region to pick up a provincial championship.

The Whitbourne-based TeePees defeated the Straits 7-5 in the title match of the peewee D division tournament in St. Barbe April 23.

It was Trinity Placentia’s sixth straight victory in the tournament.

Members of the team are: Nicholas Lahey, Ethan Russell, Colby Barrett, Ryan Hillier, TJ Legge, Ethan Pollett, Brady Whalen, Riley Newhook, Riley Mayne, Abby Reid, Hunter Somerton, Michael Reid, Josh Sanford, Mark Davis and Zack Newhook.

The Bay Arena peewee C Rovers were also successful in their quest for a provincial title.
