One of Poseidon Swim Club’s senior members left for the west coast of Canada with the Newfoundland and Labrador provincial team yesterday (May 14) for a national competition.

Local swimming standout Allison Somers, 17, is in New Westminster, B.C. to compete in the 2014 Hyack Youth Cup festival, an annual event. She will face off against some of the best swimmers the country has to offer.

The event begins May 16 and concludes May 18.

Somers has qualified for the 100 and 200 metre butterfly, 50 and 200 freestyle and the 200 individual medley.

She is also scheduled to compete in relay events with other Team NL members throughout the weekend.

Somers has taken top awards at most of the provincial swim meets she has attended during the 2013-14 season. This is one of the last events she will participate in as a member of Poseidon Swim Club.

Results from the meet can be seen live at or through the meet mobile app for smart phones and tablets.
