With a day of practice rounds in the books, the competition began at Grande Meadows Golf Course Friday morning.

Grande Meadows Golf Course in Frenchman's Cove is hosting the 2014 Royal LePage Provincial Amateur Championships this weekend.

The Frenchman’s Cove nine hole is hosting the 2014 Royal LePage Provincial Amateur Championships over the weekend.

Greg Hillier, executive director for Golf Newfoundland and Labrador, said the organization is pleased with the turnout after a bit of a dismal year in 2013.

“If you compare it to last year in Gander, we had a total of 66 golfers, and this year we’ve got 90.”

Just six women signed up for last year’s amateur championships, Hillier noted, compared to 18 this year.

“We’re very pleased with what we’ve attracted here in the area,” he said.

Corner Brook’s Judy Gillam, who has won six of the last eight senior women’s titles, is among this year’s field and was looking forward to competing after a year off last year.

“The course is excellent, and it’s in excellent shape,” Gillam said Thursday. “The greens are super.”

Grande Meadows course superintendent Bill Lee said about 20 golfers from the Burin Peninsula are registered for the championships.
