The Town of Marystown will play host to the sixth edition of the Burin Peninsula Summer Games this weekend.

The Town of Marystown is hosting the sixth edition of the Burin Peninsula Summer Games from July 20-26. Councillor Mary Beth Farrell (left), co-chair of the Games with fellow Councillor Darlene LaFosse-Blagdon, and recreation director Dominic Lundrigan are emphasizing event is about having fun.

The event, which will see over 400 athletes participate in a variety of different sports, runs from Sunday through Saturday.

Teams are once again divided into five regions – Northern, Southern, Central, Western and Host (Marystown).

The Town of Marystown hosted the very first regional Games in 2001.

The intention, beginning with Grand Bank in 2003, was to schedule the event every second year. The Games were held in the Placentia West region in 2005 and St. Lawrence in 2007. The Town of Burin hosted the next Games in 2010.

Marystown, which also hosted the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games in 2004, had aimed to host the event in 2013 but had to push them back until this year.

Dave Brenton, who helped found the Burin Peninsula Summer Games and has been a big supporter of recreation in Marystown over the years, is serving as patron for this year’s event.

According to Dominic Lundrigan, recreation director with the Town of Marystown, the benefits of taking part in the Games, such as learning sportsmanship and fitness, are lessons that can be carried into all aspects of life and are not just applicable to the sporting world.

With the theme of the 2014 Summer Games “Together We All Win,” Lundrigan said organizers want to emphasize the event is not about winning or who’s best.

“(The) Games are not based on competition. It is not a competitive Games. It is just a participation Games,” he said.
