Noah Donovan selected to under-15 squad

When scouts are looking you want to have your best performance.
You want to showcase all of your talents and what makes you stand out as an athlete and a teammate.

Upper Island Cove's Noah Donovan has been named to the provincial under-15 baseball team.

That is exactly what Upper Island Cove teen Noah Donovan had at the Mary Tavenor Memorial Baseball Tournament in Corner Brook July 11-13.

A member of the CBN Bulldogs bantam AA squad, Donovan was in the running for a spot on the provincial under-15 baseball team headed for the national tournament in Vaughn, Ont., later this summer.

It is a team he would later make, becoming one of nine Bulldogs selected to provincial teams this summer.

The Tavenor tournament was the last step in the evaluation of the 18 players who make up the squad and the coaches were watching.

“I had a strong Tavenor tournament,” said Donovan.

A middle infielder and one of his team's top arms, the 15-year-old was solid at the plate and on the mound in the tournament. But, it might have been a pair of plays at the shortstop position that stuck out in the minds of evaluators.

In one game, Donovan was shading the hitter towards the middle of the diamond when the ball was slapped to the left hand side. Ranging to his right, he went into the hole between third and second and snagged the ball on his backhand.

Planting his right leg, Donovan uncorked a strong throw to first base to get the runner.

“I showed my versatility,” he said of the impressive display of athleticism and baseball acumen.

Donovan is the only player from Baseball CBN to be named to the under-15 squad, making one of the top 18 players for his age group in the province.

“It’s pretty cool,” he said.

It was only a day after the Tavenor Memorial tournament ended when Donovan found out about his selection.

He received a phone call from coach David Coates asking him if he wanted to accept his spot on the team.

“I was pretty quick to say yes,” Donovan said with a smile.

He is the son of Brian and Corinne Donovan of Upper Island Cove.
