Carbonear under-12 squirt player Hunter Saunders makes sure he is ready for a ground ball. Saunders and his teammates are heading to O'Leary, P.E.I., for the Atlantic under-12 boys Fast Pitch Softball Championships Sept. 12-14.
The members of the Carbonear under-12 squirt fast pitch softball team have been fine-tuning their games over the last couple of weeks with eyes on travelling to Prince Edward Island this weekend.
More specifically, the team is travelling to the 2014 Atlantic under-12 Boys Softball Championship in O’Leary, P.E.I., Sept. 12-14.
‚ÄúIt‚Äôs about getting them exposure and experience,‚ÄĚ said coach David Kennedy.
His team will be squaring off with teams from the host province, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec and possibly Ontario.
The tournament will feature an increased Newfoundland-flavour as a team from the Goulds is also participating in the event.
‚ÄúThe players get to see mainland competition,‚ÄĚ said Kennedy.
Many of the players captured the under-12 slo pitch provincial title earlier this summer, although there will be some new faces heading to this tournament.
In Newfoundland, whether it is baseball or softball the season is shorter than other provinces.
The up-and-down weather makes it near impossible to get a handle on things until Canada Day.
‚ÄúThe biggest thing is the season is short,‚ÄĚ said Kennedy. ‚ÄúThis lengthens it.‚ÄĚ
Members of the travelling teams are Hunter Saunders, Liam Underhay, Matthew King, Reid Deering, Ben Tuck, Joshua Kennedy, Bradley Byrne, Nicholas Antle, Riley Green, Riley Meadus, Adrian Green, Mark Burke, Devon Barrett, and Jacob Griffin.
