Things got interesting at the Gateway Curling Club Wednesday as defending champion Gary Oke lost for the first time.

Oke’s Corner Brook Curling Club rink, which also consists of Terry Oke, Susan Curtis and Sigrid Fitzpatrick, lost 6-5 to Baxter House of the host Gateway Curling Club at the 2014 provincial mixed curling championships in Port aux Basques.

Oke looked to be in command of the contest with a 5-4 lead after nine ends, but the hometown skip roared back to score a single point in the 10th to tie it and robbed another in the 11th to seal the deal.

Oke and House now have identical 4-1 records atop the standings in the eight-team tournament.

Corner Brook’s Kenny Young is currently in a three-way tie for second place, but did himself no favours on Wednesday with an 8-7 loss to Bill Jenkins of St. John’s.

Jenkins struck with deuces in the third, fifth and sixth ends and singles in the first and eighth.

Young — along with rinkmates Amanda Rumboldt, Steve Moss and Kathy Miles — scored three in the fourth, two in the ninth and singles in the second and seventh.

Brian Bailey, also of the Corner Brook Curling Club, lost 7-6 to St. John’s skip Steve Routledge.

Routledge won it with a single point in the 10th end, following deuces in the second and seventh and another two singles in the fourth and fifth.

Bailey, and teammates Donna Davis, Steve Shepherd and Donna Shears, scored twice in the eighth, and registered single points in the first, third, sixth and ninth ends.

Hometown rink Don Gillam — along with Trudy Keeping, Arch Keeping and Karen Simon — is still looking for its first win after falling to Bailey 14-2.

Bailey started strong with five in the first, then put up triples in the fourth and fifth ends, a deuce in the second and a single in the seventh.

Gillam responded with singles in the third and sixth.

Earlier in the day, Gillam dropped a 12-3 decision to Steve Ryan of St. John’s.

Ryan amassed four in the fourth, three in the second and sixth and two in the seventh en route to the triumph.

Gillam had singles in the first, third and fifth ends.

In the other match on the day, Ryan defeated Routledge 8-3.

Action resumes 9 a.m. today.
