St. John's guaranteed to finish fourth in AHL's Eastern Conference

The St. John’s IceCaps are guaranteed home-ice advantage in the first round of the American Hockey League’s Calder Cup playoffs and as a result, have nailed down their home-ice dates for the best-of-five opening series, to be played against a yet-to-be-determined opponent.

The IceCaps will finish fourth in the AHL's Eastern Conference and will start the first-round series on the road, with two games, most likely on Friday and Saturday, April 25 and 26, although those dates could change, depending on whom they play. Whatever the opponent, the next three games would be played at Mile One Centre on Wednesday, April 30; Friday, May 2 and Saturday, May 3, the latter two games if necessary.

In the first round, higher seeds are given the option of beginning with two games at home and then playing the next three on the road. This applies to series where distance between cities means that the series will follow a 2-3 format. For cities close together, a 2-2-1 format is available.

St. John’s most likely first-round partner will be either the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins or the Binghamton Senators, although it is still mathematically possible for either the Albany Devils or Providence Bruins to fill the role.

The IceCaps have two regular-season games remaining, tonight against the Portland Pirates in Saco, Me., and Saturday in Worcester, Mass., versus the Sharks.

All their potential first-round opponents also have two games left, except for Albany, which has one to play.

If the IceCaps lose their two remaining games, it is possible they could finish in a tie with Wilkes-Barre or Binghamton for fourth in the conference. However, in either case, St. John’s would earn the fourth seed by way of tiebreakers.

Ticket sales for AHL playoff games at Mile On are already underway, at prices of $21, $28 and $31 per game, plus taxes and fees.
