The federal Crown corporation outlined its plan late last month to cut ferry rates by 30 per cent for the Argentia run. That reduced rate applies to all bookings made between now and March 25.
In a news release, chamber president Gerry Sullivan said his group fully supports the rate reduction strategy.
“What we envision is that visitors and tourists will enter the province through one port, either Argentia or Port aux Basques, and leave the island through the opposite port,” Sullivan said in the news release. “The savings to the travelling public will be tremendous and should increase Marine Atlantic’s traffic flow to Argentia, thus growing the bottom lines of many local businesses, including various suppliers, grocery outlets, accommodation businesses, restaurants and more.”
Placentia Mayor Wayne Power recently told The Compass he also supports the move, The mayor expects the reduced rates will increase tourist traffic in the area.
