The Montreal-based company that purchased the former ACAN Windows and Doors facility in Paradise last year has made its first development application for the site.

The Paradise town council approved in principle the Alre Properties Ltd. application to construct a gas bar and convenience store. The approval was subject to seven conditions.

Council also approved an application from JCB Enterprises, on behalf of Alre, to demolish the existing building which has sat vacant since 2015. That work is already underway.

Last fall, Alre president Roberto Di Giorgio told the Telegram the plan was to construct a retail centre measuring between 80,000 and 90,000 square feet, with construction starting this summer and the first stores opening in spring 2019.

At the time, he was unable to confirm which or how many retailers and brands would find a home at the site, but said they’ll be new to the metro region.

"We're trying to bring in new retailers and services that the citizens of Paradise need right now, that are missing, quite honestly," said Di Giorgio.

This is Alre's first venture in Atlantic Canada. Primarily its interests are located in Quebec, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The company is the largest branch landlord for Bank of Montreal locations in Canada.
