Bay Roberts named one of 10 finalists for Kraft Hockeyville
Kraft Hockeyville announced its 10 finalists Saturday night, and the Bay Roberts Bay Arena was among them.
Dragon Boat crews from across the country will be celebrating Canada Day with a three-day paddle in central Newfoundland
The Central NL Dragon Boat team raised funds to buy a boat last year.
Breast cancer survivors from across Canada will be taking part in a three-day paddling adventure on Gander Lake at the end of June.
Joanne Power, the chair of the Central NL Dragons, told TC Media that Dragon Boat crews from Ontario, New Brunswick and British Columbia have already been confirmed.
“It’s going to be a fabulous event to bring survivors together to do something purposeful and to promote healthy living, exercise and well-being,” she said.
The event will be hosted by the Central NL Dragons, in partnership with the Avalon Dragons and the Town of Appleton.
The Central NL Dragons operate from a boathouse at the Appleton waterfront and train there twice a week.
“Appleton has been a huge supporter of our team since we started,” Power said. “They’ve helped us get a boathouse and floating docks. They’ve allowed us time to put more time into the paddling, the dragon boat experience than into administration. ”
Crews will paddle from the Denny’s Pit area to the Silent Witness on day one, then on to Little Harbour on day two, finishing up at Appleton on day three — July 1 — to celebrate Canada Day.
Power says they plan to paddle each morning. Later in the day, the paddlers will be transported back to a tent city at Little Harbour where they’ll take part in yoga, dance and musical events around the campfire.
She added that it’s not only a great event for the participants, it’s a great way to showcase the opportunities for adventure travel in the central region.
With 22 members on each crew, plus others on safety boats, it’s going to be a huge event to organize.
“We’re looking for tons of volunteers if anyone in the community is interested,” Power said.
They’re also looking for sponsors. Body Quest in St. John’s is already on board as a sponsor and the Town of Gander is offering in kind and logistical support.
