CARBONEAR, NL — Rebecca Sellars loves to read and write, so when she noticed an online item about a provincial poetry contest themed around libraries, she was game to give it a go.

"I do like poetry, and I've done well with it in school," said Rebecca, a Grade 8 student at Carbonear Academy.

Her efforts paid off. Rebecca's mother Dana was tipped off to tune in to CBC Radio last Monday, where the winners of the Newfoundland and Labrador Library Association rhyming poetry contest were set to be announced. Rebecca's poem was the winning entry at the intermediate level and read live on air.

"I feel happy," the 13-year-old told the Compass. "I think not a lot of kids my age are really willing to do this, and poetry is something kids my age don't really think about, so it's really good that I entered it and I'm happy that I did it, because I never thought that I'd win it."

For the contest, writers were tasked with submitting a poem inspired by the phrase "A visit will get you thinking." Rebecca makes regular use of her school library and is a big fan of reading.

"I really, really like to read. I read older books sometimes, just because I find that sometimes teen books aren't really in my alley," Rebecca said, adding she's particularly fond of the Harry Potter series. As a younger child, she also enjoyed the Amanda Greenleaf books by Newfoundland author Ed Kavanagh.

Rebecca will receive a prize package from the provincial library association for her winning entry.

POEM:

A Visit Will Get You Thinking

As I enter the door

and find my favourite, cozy chair,

I sit and look around

to see just what is here!

I look at all the shelves,

and all the things they hold

there are so many different books,

with so many stories told.

Each visit gets me thinking,

of what each book reveals.

Of stories of truth and fiction,

love and laughter too.

The library is the place for me

so many things to see and do!

So for at least one hour everyday,

let's put away our phones,

our laptops and computers,

And read a book of poems!!
