Simon Ernst earned a gold medal in the event for the post-secondary level at the 2017 Skills Canada National Competition. Ernst was one of 49 people representing Newfoundland and Labrador at the event in Winnipeg, competing against hundreds of others from across the country.

Earlier this year, Ernst repeated as a gold medalist in precision machining at the provincial level for Skills Canada, earning him the right to travel to Winnipeg for this year's national event, held May 31-June 3.
