READY TO ROLL - Last year's annual Heart's Delight-Islington Poker Run had about 100 participants. The event, scheduled for this coming weekend, Feb. 23 is in memory of former firefighter Carl Bishop who passed away suddenly in June 2007. A similar fundraising event for the same day will be held in Dildo. Funds raised during this event, hosted by the Community Five Lion's Club, will go towards the upgrading of the Old Track road. If mother nature cooperates the sixth annual ATV Snowmobile Poker Run for the town of Heart's Delight-Islington will be off to a good start this coming Saturday, Feb. 23. The event, hosted by the town's volunteer fire department, usually draws around 100 participants.
"People from the town and surrounding area look forward to it and we've always gotten good support," says Steve Crocker, who along with Wade Lahey, is organizing the event.
"All the fire fighters help out with the organizing in some form," continues Crocker. "The money raised through this year's run will be used to purchase a new breathing apparatus for the fire department."
Funds raised through the Poker Run over the years have provided the department with numerous pieces of fire fighting equipment.
Registration will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. at the fire hall and riders will make their way to Line Road for the 8-10 kilometre run shortly after. A free lunch before and after the run will be provided and prizes will be handed out during the day.
The event will conclude later in the evening with some live entertainment and a dance at Bryant's Country Club.
If the weather doesn't cooperate the run will be held the following Saturday March 1. Anyone wishing to participate can contact Wade Lahey at 588-2342 or Steve Crocker at 588-2600.

Dildo run
Meanwhile just a little further up the shore another Poker Run is set for the same day in the community of Dildo. That event, hosted by the Community Five Lion's Club, will get under way at 10 a.m at the Lion's Centre.
"We actually have two fundraisers taking place during this event," explains Winston Harnum, president of the Community Five Lions. "A sponsored ski-doo run where anyone with $25 in sponsors is eligible for a number of prizes and a poker run which is thrown in for fun. The $5 registration fee from the poker run goes toward a 50-50 draw. The money raised from both fundraisers will be used to upgrade the Old Track road from New Harbour to Broad Cove."
According to the president the club already has $3,700 in the bank for the project.
"This is a project we took on several years ago because it is something that will really benefit the people in the area." says Harnum. "The road is currently in pretty rough shape. However once some of the brush is removed and a bit of ground work is done it can be used for a walking trail, cross country skiing, riding ATVs and ski-doos. This type of trail is something that is really needed here in the area."
The club is hoping the provincial government will come through with more funding for the trail.
"We've applied for a grant and have spoken to a couple of politicians but are still waiting to hear back. We have some money and are fundraising for more. We're doing our part, hopefully government will do theirs."
Over the past eight years thousands of dollars have been raised during the annual ATV Poker Run.
"Every year we always used the money during the run to support some community project," says Harnum. "Everything from equipment for the fire department to an ultrasound device for the hospital. The money always goes to the community, never back to the club," he points out.
A dance will be held at the Lion's Centre later in the evening.
