Rebecca Tizzard captured the Baccalieu Lions Club public speaking competition crown at the club's speak off at Baccalieu Collegiate in Old Perlican on Feb. 25.

The daughter of Wendy and Roger Tizzard of Old Perlican, Rebecca is a Level III student at Baccalieu.

Rebecca won for her speech entitled, 'distance education: beneficial to students or detrimental to success?'

She beat out six other competitors to take the win.

Rebecca tackled the advantages and disadvantages for students who are involved with the Department of Education's Centre for Distance Learning and Innovation (CDLI), using her own experiences as the backdrop of her argument.

With the win, Rebecca moves on to the zone speak off being held at the Lions Club in Bay Roberts on March 14.
