The 138-year-old Star of the Sea Association in Placentia held its annual meeting and election of officers on Sunday, Jan. 5, in the Star Memorial Hall. The event was preceded with a meal served by the ladies auxiliary, supervised by Winnie Cleary. Besides the Star members and officers, guests included directors of the ladies auxiliary and federal and provincial members for the district. Frank Maher acted as master of ceremonies.
After a brief welcome by president Gerard McGrath and ladies auxiliary president Nellie Moore, members sat down to the usual enjoyable roast beef dinner. Fr. Jerome Hann said grace.
Following the dinner there were a number of presentations and awards. However, before that there was a moment of silence for members who had passed away during the past year. Avalon MP Scott Andrews and Placentia-St. Mary's MHA Felix Collins then made brief statements bringing best wishes and congratulations to the Star for its efforts and wishing members well in future.
The following were installed as honourary members of the association: Carl Bruce, Ed Gaulton, Dennis Leonard, Marcel Leonard, Brian Mooney and Edward Tobin.
Two high school students received scholarships. Brittany McCarthy received two, one for Level 1 English and one for Level 1 history. The history scholarship was presented by John Bruce in Memory of Leo Bruce. Lindsay Green received a scholarship for gaining 99 per cent in Grade 9 religion.
The ladies auxiliary president, Nellie Moore, presented a cheque to The Star of the Sea Association president, Gerard McGrath. Tom O’Keefe received a gift from the Star for his photography work. The final presentation was a cheque from the Star of the Sea to parish priest Fr. Jerome Hann.
The association then proceeded with the business of the annual meeting. The financial statement presented by treasurer Paul Power showed the association to be in satisfactory financial condition. A report from public relations officer George Mooney indicated the association had a very active year.
The business closed with an election of officers conducted by Edward Traverse. Directors elected for the coming year were: president Gerard McGrath, vice-president Jim Roache, secretary Dave Griffin, treasurer Paul Power, public relations George Mooney, grand marshall Alf Cahill and directors Kevin Traverse and Bill Bailey.
