Grants have been announced by the provincial government for seniors’ physical activity initiatives and organizations, with 11 in the Trinity-Conception-Placentia region.
The Seniors Community Recreation Grant Program recipients were revealed Monday, March 3 at the Kilbride Lions Community Centre by Minister Terry French of the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, totalling some $200,000 for the province.
The grant is designed to help seniors’ groups, communities and recreation committees provide programs and services focused on increasing physical and leisure activity for seniors. There are 110 recipients from the 2013-14 program.
Funding will be used for different programs, including hiking, nature outings, community gardens, trail walking groups, indoor exercise classes, social gatherings and yoga.
Recipients from the Trinity-Conception-Placentia region include Brigus area 50-plus club with $2,100, as well as Cavendish area 50-plus club, Hant’s Harbour recreation, Marysvale Turks Gut Heritage Conservation Inc., Marysvale-Turks Gut C.B. 50-plus seniors group, Town of Small Point-Broad Cove-Blackhead-Adam’s Cove, Town of Brigus, Town of Perry’s Cove-Salmon Cove, Town of Placentia, Upper Island Cove Recreation and Whiteway 50-plus club at $2,000 each.
