A group of young dancers from the Trinity-Conception region are stepping their way to Disney World in Orlando, Fla.
The Calico Steppers, a group of students from the high profile Vanda Maunder Dance Studio in Brigus, will take their considerable talents to the Magic Kingdom in late June for the Dance the World event, as well as the Magic Kingdom Parade.
Their trip to Florida will also give them the opportunity to perform on Canada Day at the famed amusement park.
For just under two decades, step-dance group has treated local audiences to their fancy footwork at various concerts, fundraising events and folk festivals like the annual Brigus Blueberry Festival, where they’ve been on the annual entertainment roster for more than a decade.
Featuring 30-plus dancers from the ages of nine to 19, the Calico Steppers won’t be displaying their dancing skills for the first time abroad. In previous years, the Steppers have performed in Vermont, Ottawa, Ont., Gatineau, Que., as well as Charlottetown, P.E.I.
For the past year, the group and their parents have been fundraising for the upcoming adventure by selling cookie dough and chocolate Easter bunnies.
With the departure date for Florida gets closer, they’ve been perfecting their step-dance numbers that they will perform to their traditional Newfoundland-Irish rhythms.
