Carbonear's new skatepark officially opened June 20, with a group of Grade 5 students from Carbonear Academy, teachers, Lions Club members and municipal leaders on hand.

The event, which took place at 2:15 p.m. just before dismissal, didn't give much time for the students to bring along their skateboards, scooters or bikes, but they had the chance to check out the equipment. Some boys even used the quarter pipe as a slide.

The students were happy for the chance to take part in the opening, with some of them saying they would be back to try it out soon.

The Lions Club of Carbonear were excited to help make the park a reality, through a donation of some $55,000.

While posing for a photo, the students, whose school mascot is a Lion, yelled out, "Lions" to show school pride, but also as a sign of respect for the club.
