A home on Mount Pleasant Road in Harbour Grace was hit by a fire around 1 p.m. this afternoon, leaving one man in serious condition.

One firefighter told The Compass the call came in at 1:01 p.m., and they immediately headed to the residence.

Firefighters were already on scene when RCMP arrived.

When the group entered the home, the 88-year-old male resident was found inside with serious injuries. The man was alone in the home.

After being removed from the home by the volunteer firefighters, he was immediately taken by ambulance to Carbonear General Hospital.

The point of origin of the fire was an upstairs bedroom.

Sgt. Greg Hicks with the Trinity Conception RCMP said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

A guard is positioned outside the residence overnight.

A fire investigator and an investigator from the officer of the fire commissioner are expected to be at the scene tomorrow.
