Residents of Carbonear woke up to a racist slur spray-painted on the side of a municipal building this morning.

The pump house located at the intersection of Pikes Land and Beach Road was vandalized overnight with graffiti.

Black writing, combining the term mafia with an expletive, was painted on the north side of the small yellow and green building.

Sgt. Richard Marshall with the Trinity Conception RCMP confirmed it was reported overnight, and this morning an officer will be checking out the site. No other details were available at this time.

The ground surrounding the pump house is covered in thick ice and winds have been high over the past two days, making it difficult to approach the building.

Municipal Enforcement Officer Gord Parsons is looking at the town's cameras to see if they may have picked up anything from overnight.

Public works employees have already painted over the words.

If you have any information on this incident you can contact the Harbour Grace RCMP detachment at 596-5014 or the Town of Carbonear at 596-3831.
